Example Project: Alameda Power & Telecom

Alameda Power & Telecom’s (APT) broadband venture and its underwriter, Stone & Youngberg, retained Uptown in 2003 to evaluate the 5-Year business plan and create a financial pro forma. The project scope tasked Uptown with validating their current business plan, including an in-depth analysis of operational and financial feasibility of their assumptions and forecasts. Uptown’s analysis was used in consideration of a $33million bond refinancing which closed successfully in April, 2004.

The methodology on this project involved a creative combination of financial analysis of APT’s current cable and Internet operation combined with benchmark analysis against target operating metrics for the industry. Three overall tasks were completed:

1) Uptown validated the key assumptions and forecasts within the Alameda business plan. Industry targets were established via two sources; the actual operating metrics of a major MSO as well as the business plan of a similar municipal broadband project. Uptown used summary statistics to confirm or challenge key assumptions of the Alameda business plan using these sources. Over 20 key variables, including subscriber metrics, operating metrics, and capital metrics, were analyzed in detail.

2) Uptown completed a secondary market analysis to cost-effectively assess and characterize the revenue stream facing Alameda. To accomplish this, Uptown reviewed incumbent product offerings and pricing relative to APT price levels. Uptown also benchmarked the penetration assumptions in the business plan against the actual penetration results of 5 other municipal broadband markets.

3) Uptown also completed a pro-forma financial analysis including:
  • Annual cash flows
  • Present value analysis
  • Capital cost projections
  • Estimated working capital requirements
  • Market penetration analysis
  • Estimated annual operating costs for staff, programming and operations
  • Projected sources of revenue and variable costs of services
